Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and based out of Los Angeles, California, Andy Ferreira is an honors graduate from world renowned Musician’s Institute, where he currently works. More than a teacher, he also works as a professional musician in many different musical scenes in southern California, being known for his versatility an playing in and accompanying artists of many genres such as rock, metal, blues, fusion, funk, pop, country, gospel and contemporary christian music.
Andy also has an Audio Engineer and Music Production degree and co-founded one of the most important YouTube channels about guitar and technology in all of Brazil, The Tone Busters, that has gathered tens of thousand of subscribers and almost three million views. Taking advantage of that vast experience, Andy also writes for GuitarLoad magazine and endorses many relevant brands in Brazil and worldwide, such as Seymour Duncan, MusicMaker Guitars, Miuu Guitars, Celestion, Santo Angelo, Neural DSP, Positive Grid, Keeley Electronics, Collateral FX amongst many others.
Andy is also in love with teaching, this being his main musical activity since 2005 when he started by helping out a some friends in High School overcome a few challenges on the guitar and ended up finding out he wanted to do this for the rest of his life. Then, starting in 2010, whilst still living in Rio de Janeiro, Andy was teaching at the most important music schools of the city, as well as working with many private students. Due to the pandemic, in August 2019 Andy was forced to dive head first in the on-line teaching world, having released courses, training methods and programs in the areas of improvisation, technique and technology. Today Andy has over 900 online students.
Andy is a man of many passions, so talking about a single mission turns out to be quite a challenge in itself due to this vast multiplicity of aptitudes. However, there’s always been this eagerness for teaching, spreading out knowledge and assisting the growth and development of people around him, that’s why he was studying Biological Sciences in Rio’s biggest University, UFRJ, to become a teacher before dedicating full-time to pursuing music in 2010.
Moving to the United Stated in 2018 brought with it a lot of challenges that are inherent to the life of every international student and aspiring immigrant. If we add that to the global pandemic and the forced quarantine that took place in 2019, everything becomes immensely amplified, which lead Andy to dedicate aa lot of his time to the production of educational content for Instagram, posting every day for a year – sometimes 3 times a day.
The repercussion of this vast and deep content brought a huge sense of belonging, commitment and contribution to the guitar community and that’s when it finally clicked: the biggest contribution Andy could give to the world is bring top-notch knowledge about music theory, fretboard mapping, playing over changes, technique and tone/technology to the Brazilian guitar player in the form of courses and mentorships for his students, but also in the form of free content to help those that cannot afford proper instruction. And that’s what Andy has been doing passionate and incessantly since April 2019.
